Cabinet approves five‑year extension of fast‑track courts
The Union Cabinet approved on 4 November 2026 a five‑year continuation of the Centrally Sponsored Scheme for Fast Track Special Courts (FTSCs), extending it from 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2031. The scheme, which began on 10 October 2019, aims to accelerate the disposal of cases involving rape and offences under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
Expansion to 850 courts based on pendency data
Under the renewed programme, the government plans to increase the number of operational FTSCs to 850 across participating states and union territories, including courts dedicated exclusively to POCSO matters. The expansion will be guided by case‑pendency statistics from each jurisdiction. Currently, 779 FTSCs are functional, of which 399 are exclusive POCSO courts.
Financial outlay and staffing provisions
The scheme carries a total allocation of ₹3,788.04 crore, with the centre contributing ₹2,353.15 crore and the states/UTs providing ₹1,434.89 crore. Funding for the central share will be drawn from the Nirbhaya Fund. Each new court will be supported by a dedicated judicial officer, a special public prosecutor and six support staff to ensure swift trial progress.
Since its inception, the fast‑track courts have disposed of 402,457 cases, reflecting the scheme’s impact on reducing backlog. The continuation is expected to further speed up trials, promote the establishment of Vulnerable Witness Deposition Centres and create child‑friendly court environments, thereby minimizing trauma for victims, especially women and children.
