Storm intensifies and tracks toward south Andhra Pradesh

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) upgraded the system over the Bay of Bengal to a Severe Cyclonic Storm named Murasu on the morning of 2 November 2026. At 08:30 GMT the centre was located about 180 km north‑east of Chennai and 160 km east‑south‑east of Nellore, with sustained winds of 100‑110 km/h and gusts up to 120 km/h. Forecasts indicate a north‑westward movement that will bring the cyclone ashore between Nellore and Narsapur, near Ongole, between 23:30 GMT on 2 November and 04:00 GMT on 3 November.

Precautionary measures and alerts

State authorities in Andhra Pradesh have mobilised disaster response teams ahead of landfall. Six National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) units and seven State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) units have been positioned in districts likely to be affected, with two teams each in Krishna, Bapatla, Guntur, Nellore and Prakasam, and one team each in Markapuram, Palnadu and Tirupati. Additional teams remain on standby.

In Telangana, an orange alert was issued for six districts and a yellow alert for five districts for 2 November. In Tamil Nadu, the northeast monsoon has begun, and Chennai recorded 76.07 mm of rain in the 24 hours ending 06:00 GMT on 2 November, with the highest station total of 149.2 mm at Parrys.

Disruption of education and public services

District collectors in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Guntur and Bapatla have ordered the closure of schools, colleges and Anganwadi centres on 2 November due to the anticipated heavy rainfall. The Bapatla district administration, led by Collector Dr Vinod Kumar V., has reinforced drainage systems and urged residents to remain vigilant for the next four to five days.

Residents can report cyclone‑related issues via the Mana Mitra WhatsApp service (95523 00009) or contact the Disaster Management Authority on toll‑free numbers 112, 1070 and 18004250101 for emergency assistance.
