Central response after Cyclone Arnab
Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke on Thursday, October 29, 2026, with the chief ministers of Andhra Pradesh, Puducherry, Odisha and Chhattisgarh, promising full support for relief and rehabilitation efforts following Cyclone Arnab. Shah said National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams and State Disaster Response Funds have been mobilised on a war footing.
Impact on affected states
Arnab made landfall on the Andhra Pradesh coast on Wednesday, causing five deaths in the state and extensive damage to infrastructure. Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu ordered rapid relief operations, restoration of electricity and speedy compensation for affected families. In Odisha, 17 districts reported flooding, while rivers in Srikakulam, Vizianagaram and Parvathipuram Manyam districts of Andhra Pradesh continued to rise, with the Nagavali River just below its warning level.
In Vizianagaram, a lineman died while repairing power lines. Floodwater from the Bahuda River, released from an Odisha dam, entered the border town of Ichchapuram, adding to local inundation.
Weather outlook
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) noted that the system weakened into a depression over south Chhattisgarh and south Odisha on Thursday and is expected to become a well‑marked low pressure by evening, bringing heavy rain to West Bengal through Friday, October 30. A new low pressure formed over the South Andaman Sea and may intensify into a depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal.
Heavy rainfall was also recorded in Jharkhand, with Gudabanda in East Singhbhum receiving 71.4 mm and Manjhari in West Singhbhum 64 mm. Ranchi logged 26.2 mm and Chaibasa 60 mm. The Ranchi Meteorological Centre warned of continued downpours, especially outside the Santhal region.
Local political candidates in Visakhapatnam, where the cyclone caused severe damage, shifted their focus from campaigning for the upcoming civic body polls on November 1 to assisting relief operations and restoring essential services.
