Telangana CM Orders Mandatory Use of Treated Wastewater for Non‑Drinking Needs in Government Facilities

Mandate for Treated Water in Public Offices

Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy directed that all government offices and public spaces in the state must use treated wastewater for non‑drinking purposes. The order, issued after a review meeting on sewage treatment plants (STPs) at the MCR HRD Institute in Hyderabad on 28 October 2026, aims to conserve potable water and ensure efficient use of treated supply.

Implementation Measures and Monitoring

The chief minister instructed the appointment of a special officer at each STP and the integration of all plants with the Command Control Centre. Monitoring will be overseen by the Hyderabad Disaster Response and Assets Protection Agency (HYDRAA). Artificial intelligence tools are to be deployed at treatment facilities to maintain water quality standards.

Specific applications include landscaping along the Outer Ring Road, the Secretariat, the Chief Minister’s Office, public parks, and road cleaning. The Railways and Hyderabad Metro Rail are also to adopt the policy. Treated‑water tankers will be tracked, and a toll‑free number will be set up to streamline supply requests. A public awareness campaign is planned, and building‑permission guidelines will incorporate mandatory treated‑water use.

Broader Initiatives and Future Outlook

Private STPs are to receive encouragement, and the feasibility of solar‑powered treatment plants will be examined. The chief minister highlighted the need to supply treated water to data centres, anticipating growing demand. He warned that water quality must never be compromised and that continuous monitoring of drinking‑water supplies is essential to avoid shortages.

Implementation of the announced measures is to begin on 1 November 2026. According to the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB), 26 STPs currently deliver treated water via green tankers at no charge, with only transportation costs billed to users.
