Election outcome and alliance split
The ruling Mahayuti coalition in Maharashtra secured two of the five Legislative Council seats on October 29, 2026, while the opposition parties claimed the remaining three. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Shiv Sena each won one seat, and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) lost the sole seat allocated to it under the alliance’s seat‑sharing arrangement.
Accusations from the BJP
BJP spokesperson Navnath Ban criticised Shiv Sena for prioritising a single seat in Pune over collective success. He highlighted that the Sena’s late support for independent candidate Sachin Sanap in the Pune teachers’ constituency fractured the alliance’s unity, costing the coalition a potential win. Ban also pointed to Shiv Sena’s campaign against NCP candidate Abdul Sattar in Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar as further damage to the Mahayuti’s prospects.
Shiv Sena’s rebuttal
Shiv Sena leader Anand Paranjpe countered that the BJP failed to coordinate seat distribution from the outset. He noted that both Pune seats lacked incumbent BJP MLCs, yet the BJP sought both, leaving the Sena without a share. Paranjpe argued that internal dissent within the BJP, including rebel candidates in Nagpur and Pune, contributed to the poor performance. He called for the BJP to introspect and cooperate more closely with alliance partners for future contests.
The opposition parties also made gains: the NCP (led by Sharad Pawar) captured two seats, and the Congress retained its Nagpur seat, delivering a setback to the BJP‑led coalition.
