Second Escape of Convicted Thief
A 25-year-old man identified as Raghavan, convicted of theft in Bengaluru, fled police custody for the second time in Coimbatore in the early hours of Saturday, October 31, 2026.
Details of the Incident
Raghavan had previously escaped on June 19, 2026 while being transferred from Coimbatore to Bengaluru, prompting the Annur police to file a case. He was recaptured in Bhavani on Friday, October 30, and presented before a magistrate at the Coimbatore Fast Track Court, where he was ordered into judicial custody.
At approximately 12:40 a.m. on Saturday, just before being taken through the entrance gate of Coimbatore Central Prison, Raghavan pushed the escorting police officers and broke free.
Police Response
Following the escape, the Annur police lodged a complaint, leading the Race Course police to register a case. An intensive search operation involving Coimbatore City and District police, drone surveillance, CCTV analysis, and heightened vehicle checks has been launched. Special teams under senior officers are coordinating the effort, and neighboring police units have been alerted.
Four police personnel who were escorting Raghavan have been suspended for alleged lapses in duty.
