JD(U) Spokesperson Questions Opposition Cohesion

Janata Dal (United) national spokesperson Rajeev Ranjan Prasad addressed the media on November 1, 2026, after an INDIA bloc rally, stating that opposition parties unite for rallies but contest elections against each other. He argued that without agreement on leadership, a common programme and shared issues, the alliance lacks justification to continue.

Congress Remarks and JD(U) Response

During the rally, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge alleged that several state governments were formed on “stolen” mandates and urged the removal of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to protect democracy. Rahul Gandhi warned of legal action against Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, and suggested that Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar could face imprisonment.

Prasad responded by saying Gandhi’s statements ignored recent election outcomes in Karnataka, Telangana, Himachal Pradesh and Kerala, focusing instead on Bihar, the 2024 Lok Sabha elections and West Bengal. He claimed that the Congress is losing credibility and that its leadership under Gandhi is diminishing the party’s relevance.

Examples of Electoral Rivalry Within the Bloc

Prasad cited multiple instances where parties within the INDIA bloc competed against each other. He noted that the Congress and Rashtriya Janata Dal contested eight Bihar Legislative Council seats, and that the Congress faced the Aam Aadmi Party in Punjab despite both being part of the bloc. He also referenced the long‑standing contest between the United Democratic Front and the Left Democratic Front in Kerala, both considered members of the alliance.

The JD(U) spokesperson highlighted the 2024 Bihar results, where the coalition of JD(U) chief Nitish Kumar and Prime Minister Modi secured over 200 seats, while the Congress was reduced to about six seats. He urged the Congress to accept the people’s verdict and warned that failure to introspect could jeopardise its role as the Leader of Opposition in the future.
