Dr. Dinesh Kumar, a member of the Himachal Pradesh Ayurveda and Unani Board, paid a surprise visit to the Government Ayurvedic Hospital in Rampur to review healthcare services being offered under the state AYUSH department.
During the visit, he interacted directly with patients admitted under various treatment procedures and reviewed the implementation of AYUSH schemes. Dr. Kumar expressed satisfaction that despite the public holiday, Ayurvedic physician Dr. Kapil Sharma was actively treating patients using Marma Chikitsa, a specialized Ayurvedic therapy.
However, Dr. Kumar raised serious concerns regarding the overuse of expensive patented Ayurvedic medicines instead of traditional classical formulations. “This is leading to unaffordable treatment for economically weaker patients,” he noted. He added that Ayurvedic practitioners in government service must adhere to classical Ayurvedic formulations. He assured that the matter will be taken up with the AYUSH Minister, Secretary, and Director to issue statewide directives in this regard.
He also said discussions will be held to increase the supply of free government-provided Ayurvedic medicines, ensuring that no poor patient is left untreated due to lack of affordable drugs.
Dr. Kumar further expressed disappointment that the Ayurvedic Bhawan in Rampur, despite having sufficient space, has yet to install an X-ray facility. Additionally, the special patient ward lies unused. “These facilities could not only enhance patient care but also serve as additional revenue streams for the Rogi Kalyan Samiti (RKS),” he said.
Highlighting the need for emergency readiness in Ayurvedic hospitals, he emphasized that all state-run AYUSH hospitals must be equipped with basic emergency medical infrastructure and receive periodic training in modern healthcare techniques. Dr. Kumar stated he would be taking up this proposal directly with the Chief Minister and the AYUSH Minister to ensure that all Ayurvedic hospitals across the state are capable of providing timely emergency care.
