Shimla, September 12
A Kullu man has died in drowning in Chandratal Lake in Spiti valley in Himachal Pradesh, said local administration.
District administration has called on divers from Sundernagar to recover the body of the man.
An eyewitness said that the man jumped into the lake for swimming but after some time he suddenly sank into the cold glacial water of the lake.
Pawan Kumar, the man who drowned yesterday, is son of Pesh Ram and hails from Buragram in Kullu district.
This glacial lake named Chandratal or Moon Lake after its crescent shaped basin resembling the moon is located at an altitude of 4300 metres.
For both Hindu and Buddhist, it has got religious significance and local people treat it as a sacred water body and bathing and swimming is not allowed in the lake.
Chandratal is very deep with a maximum 42.53m depth in the south part of the lake.
