In a transformative initiative aimed at fostering community engagement and development in remote border areas, the Indian Army has launched a community radio station, Voice of Kinnaur, in Pooh, Kinnaur district of Himachal Pradesh. This initiative is a part of the Army’s continued outreach in high-altitude and border regions, reflecting its deep respect for the sacrifices and contributions of local communities in nation-building.
The inauguration ceremony witnessed the participation of senior officers from the Indian Army’s Surya Command, civil administration officials, government representatives, and a large gathering of enthusiastic locals — a testament to the community’s overwhelming support for the initiative. Established under the Army’s flagship Operation Sadbhavana, Voice of Kinnaur is envisioned as a grassroots platform to disseminate local news, promote regional culture, share educational and healthcare content, and broadcast key public interest information.
In a symbolic gesture, the Army Commander invited the Principal of Trypex School — where the station has been set up — to officially inaugurate the radio station.
Speaking on the occasion, Lieutenant General Anindya Sengupta, GOC-in-C Central Command, highlighted the strategic significance of the station, stating, “Voice of Kinnaur stands as a beacon of trust and collaboration between the Indian Army and the people of Himachal Pradesh. It will play a vital role in preserving cultural heritage, raising community issues, and ensuring timely access to relevant information in this remote region.”
Local leaders and residents expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Indian Army, noting that the station would serve as a crucial medium for youth, women, and apple growers to voice their concerns, celebrate achievements, and promote local initiatives. The station aims to boost community participation by collaborating with local talents, schools, and cultural institutions.
A local resident remarked, “Voice of Kinnaur will help bridge the communication gap, empower our community, and give us a platform to celebrate our culture and address our needs.”
With this initiative, the Indian Army reaffirms its commitment to holistic development and community welfare in the remote regions of Himachal Pradesh. Regular broadcasts from the radio station will commence soon, further strengthening the bond between the Army and the people of Kinnaur while fostering a spirit of unity and progress.
