Kinnaur, Report by Bisheshar Negi.
Tourists visiting Himachal Pradesh are now being welcomed not just by the scenic beauty of the mountains, but also by the authentic flavors of Kinnaur’s tribal cuisine.
At the gateway of Kinnaur in Chaura, local women have started a unique Tribal Food Stall, serving traditional and organic dishes — a delicious initiative that blends culture, health, and women empowerment.
Organic Flavors, Rooted in Tradition
Set up by the women of Laxmi Self-Help Group, this food stall offers dishes made from local, chemical-free produce — recipes passed down through generations.
The initiative was formally launched by Forest Range Officer Parmanand, who also guided the women on ways to turn the stall into a sustainable livelihood source. This project is supported under the JICA Project (Japan International Cooperation Agency) by the Forest Department.
Leela, Member, Laxmi SHG, Chaura: “We’re reviving forgotten tribal dishes. Our goal is to introduce them to the world — and empower local women in the process.”
A Healthy Hit Among Tourists
The food here is not just tasty — it’s nutritious, healing, and rooted in Kinnaur’s herbal wisdom. Tourists are not only enjoying the flavors but also discovering the cultural stories behind each .
Nidhi, Tourist from Delhi:
“We were amazed by the local food. It’s fresh, delicious, and so healthy. A perfect taste of Himachal!”
Surekha, Representative, JICA Project:“These traditional recipes once kept tribal communities strong and disease-free. We want the world to taste and learn from them.”
Flavors That Empower
This humble food stall is turning into a symbol of cultural pride, tourism innovation, and women-led development. Kinnaur’s authentic taste is now crossing borders — with a message of sustainability and self-reliance.
