India’s last inhabited village on the Indo-Tibetan border, Chhitkul, is scripting a new chapter in sustainable mountain farming. At an altitude of 11,500 feet, the village hosted a high-impact awareness camp on modern horticultural practices, under the banner of Viksit Krishi Sankalp Abhiyan 2025.

The program, led by KVK Kinnaur of Dr. Yashwant Singh Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry (Nauni, Solan), attracted active participation from local farmers, youth, Gram Panchayat representatives, and ITBP officers and jawans, in coordination with ITBP Deputy Commandant Shri Jashwant.

Dr. Inder Dev, Director of Extension Education, chaired the event and emphasized natural farming, self-reliance, and national integration. He appreciated the participation of ITBP personnel from six Indian states, symbolizing unity in purpose.

Dr. Pramod Sharma, Associate Director (Research) and KVK Head, introduced innovative high-density apple farming models tested in regions like Sungra, Telangi, and Nako, encouraging farmers to adopt nature-based orchard development.

Fruit Scientist Dr. Arun Negi provided insight into climate-resilient horticulture. Experts from the Horticulture and Animal Husbandry Departments shared vital information on schemes aimed at supporting high-altitude agriculture.

Gram Panchayat Up-Pradhan Shri Rajesh and ITBP ASI Devki Nandan urged wider adoption of these techniques, including within ITBP camps like Mastrang, to enhance self-sufficiency and reduce dependency on external supplies.

The event symbolized a bold step toward building a green, self-reliant and resilient Himalayan farming model, perfectly aligning with the Government of India’s vision for agricultural transformation under Viksit Krishi Sankalp Abhiyan.
